Day 3: Razer Megalodon?
Written by Buzztiger
Friday, 22 August 2008

megalodon-echtToday I had a chance to take a closer look at Razer's new headset the Razer Megalodon. For the name, its a shark or  better it was a shark since it's extinct for quite a while (1.6 million years). Afaik it's the first time that Razer names one of the products after an extinct species. They must be runnig out of names. Anyway, after the not overly successful  Barracuda sound system the community will be very sceptic about a new headset from Razer, especially a surround version. So what's different now? First, Razer no longer tries to implement a 5.1 speaker system into a headphone. It's a stereo headset. So how do they get a 3 dimensional soundscape? It's called head-related transfer function (HRTF) or binaural recording. It processes a given sound by taking into account the diffraction and reflection properties of the human head and ears. It's not a new invention and has been implemented before with known brands as A3D and Sensaura. Razer claims that they have made significant improvements to this technology. Enough to make it suitable for gaming.

Sky05:00 am in the morning. After a long trip around the world from Australia (where I'm currently working on my PhD) I'm finally in Leipzig for this years Games Convention. Have a day to relax and to get rid of my jet lag as the GC will officially start tomorrow.  Something very special for the evening though :Game tunes played by an orchestra! Razer has invited me to the Video Games Live concert. Started to upload some pics to the gallery.
